The Peace@School Toolkit

What people are saying about the Peace@School Toolkit:

Dr. Debra Pepler, Professor of Psychology, York University

The Peace@School toolkit will help any school group that is committed to change to take this sometimes difficult, but also rewarding journey. Students will feel safe and more peaceful and, as a result, their educational experience will be enhanced. Parents will be reassured that their children are learning in an environment free from physical and emotional harm. Teachers will feel more relaxed and the whole school environment will improve, enabling the education of the whole child.

Tom Hedderson, Minister of Education,
Newfoundland and Labrador

The Peace@School DVD presentations clearly emphasize in a very realistic and practical way, the commitment required by school staffs to facilitate change in the school climate. The DVDs acknowledge the challenges - the initial resistance of staff, the persistence and intensive efforts required, the setbacks, and the leadership commitments - but also emphasize the rewards obtained when the culture of the school is a peaceful one. The Peace@School discussion guides for teachers and students encourage activities and appropriate dialogue within the classroom.

Madeline Dubé, Minister of Education, New Brunswick

Peace@School is a well thought-out resource for fostering an atmosphere of peace within our schools.

The Honourable Myra A. Freeman O.N.S.,
Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia

Everyone involved in the development and production of this resource guide is to be highly commended for placing such excellent resource material into the hands of educators and youth. This resource will go a long way toward helping them with their efforts to create and sustain the peaceful learning environment to which all young people are entitled.

Carole Wylie, Dept. Head, Professional Issues,
Manitoba Teachers’ Society

The toolkit looks terrific. We will be looking at how to promote the toolkit among our membership.

Catherine Walker, Resource Manager,
Special Education, Alberta Learning

Congratulations on this ambitious resource.

Marilyn Noble, Animator/Facilitator, B.A.S.I.C.
(Building A Socially Inclusive Community)

The Peace@School Toolkit presents unvarnished realities that teachers, administrators, and students recognize right away. It encourages each of these groups to reflect on the current culture (and subcultures!) in their school and to work together to implement solutions that are shaped by local circumstances. Most importantly, it reminds us that the students are the undisputed front-line experts, and that they need to be engaged in every step of the process: identifying the trouble spots, developing the solutions, and reporting back on expected and unintended outcomes of any measure that is introduced.
